ubuntu server 8.01 Dose not have a graphical mode installed by default. A server dose not need one it just wastes system resources

If you want to install one type
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
This will install the desktop part.

or
sudo apt-get install gnome xorg gdm
If you do not want all the defualt programs
